About Earth Wind & Fire:

For more than 40 years, a band that grew out of Chicago’s rich musical tradition has thrilled millions with its uplifting songs and spectacular performances,” said Chicago District Manager/Postmaster, “We are honored to come together with the City to recognize Earth, Wind & Fire on this special day.”

The band’s roots date back to the late ‘60s, when Chess Records session drummer Maurice White formed a short-lived, Chicago-based trio, the Salty Peppers. After that group’s demise, Maurice moved to Los Angeles and recruited his younger brother Verdine to join him. They then formed the first version of Earth, Wind & Fire, which recorded three albums for Warner Brothers in 1970-71. After several members of that line-up left, Maurice recruited new musicians, including vocalist Philip Bailey, and the revamped version was signed to Columbia Records in 1972.

Since then, the band has received 20 Grammy nominations; they won six as a group and two of its members, Maurice White and Bailey, won separate individual awards. Earth, Wind & Fire have 12 American Music Awards nominations and four awards. They have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and sold over 90 million albums worldwide.
